BEN TRAVIS, PHD Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Benjamin Travis is the Chief Executive Officer of Calibre Scientific, and Anatrace Products. After Anatrace was acquired by StoneCalibre in 2013, Ben has assisted StoneCalibre with technical aspects of Life Sciences M&A and has seen the business through five successful transactions since then: Edge BioSystems (2014), Microlytic (2015), Concise Separations (2015), Molecular Dimensions (2017), and Alpha-Tec Systems (2017).

Ben has over 20 years of experience in the life sciences industry. He has worked effectively in both technical and leadership positions and his management style and skills allow him to work cross-functionally between all branches of the organization. At Affymetrix, as the Life Science Reagents R&D Director, Ben was frequently the face and voice of company products for customers across both the USB and Anatrace brands. In this role, he developed the ability to convey technical information to experts and non-experts alike, and translate customer input and scientific trends into new, exciting, viable products.

Ben has developed two patents, authored 15 publications, and has created and conducted numerous presentations at various summits and symposiums across the United States.

MIKE DRURY Chief Financial Officer

As the Chief Financial Officer for Calibre Scientific, Mike brings with him over 14 years of CFO/VP experience to the team. In Mike’s previous role he served as the President of Portfolio Operations at StoneCalibre and was responsible for the evaluation of new acquisition opportunities and overseeing the portfolio operations. Prior to that experience Mike Served as the CFO of Source Technologies, also a StoneCalibre portfolio company and over 16 years at General Electric.

Mike earned his MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and his B.B.A in Accounting from Cleveland State University. Mike is a Certified Public Accountant.


BRICE GEOFFRION Director of Business Development

Brice joined Calibre Scientific in January of 2018 as the Director of Business Development, tasked with identifying new M&A opportunities and driving business development efforts in the Life Sciences and Healthcare industries. Brice is also an Associate with StoneCalibre, the private investment firm that backs Calibre Scientific.

Prior to joining StoneCalibre, Brice worked for an insurance brokerage firm that specialized in placement for private equity groups. He earned his BS in Finance from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.


MIKE IRWIN Senior Vice President, Sales

As the Senior Vice President of Sales, Mike’s fields of expertise have evolved from chromatography to general molecular biology and on to RT-PCR, microarrays, NGS, cytogenetics, and now proteins and structure. He has met all operational requirements needed for both entrepreneurial and large company roles, driving accountability and creativity with structures, channels, forecasts, budgets, CRM, and campaigning.

Mike has been successfully leading sales and business development with an active, hands-on touch for 25 years at Bio-Rad, ABI/LifeTech, PacBio, Agilent, and RainDance. He has managed large operational initiatives, like going to a direct channel business in Brazil, and turned over both Agilent’s and RainDance’s lists of top sold-to companies from a handful of key academics to a diverse group containing many more key biopharma and Dx firms. At PacBio, as director of business development, Mike was one of the first three commercial leaders that launched the RS platform, which hit its first-year target of $40M in sales.

Mike has put feet on the street, held P&L, and managed sales, support, and field marketing for up to $150M of business in the Americas, and has extensive ties with EMEA and APAC partners.


MATTHEW LORENCE, PHD, MBA Senior Vice President, Marketing

Dr. Matthew Lorence is Senior Vice President of Marketing for Calibre Scientific, and President and CEO of Edge Biosystems, a portfolio company of Calibre Scientific. He has extensive experience in genomic technologies, including NGS and Sanger sequencing, RT-PCR, and microarrays, with broad knowledge of the CLIA regulations related to the development of LDTs based on these technologies.

Matt has more than 20 years of experience in the molecular diagnostic, genomics, and life science tools industries, from start-up to highly-matrixed organizations, with a track record of growing existing businesses, building new businesses, and developing strategies to enter new markets. Matt has also served as Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development for TessArae, LLC, and Associate Director of Business Development for biodefense, infectious disease, and all other microbiology applications at Affymetrix.

Matt has authored 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals and given technical and commercial presentations at numerous international conferences and symposia. In addition to his commercial activities, Matt is a member of the Steering Committee for the ATCC Standards Development Organization, a Subject Matter Expert for the B.Next program at In-Q-Tel, and an External Grant Reviewer for Grand Challenges Canada.


JAMES SCHMALZ, MBA Senior Vice President, Operations

As the Senior Vice President of Operations for Calibre Scientific, James brings over 15 years of experience in the life science industry, including 10 years of senior operations management. James joined Calibre Scientific in July 2017, and has extensive experience in manufacturing operations, supply chain management, process improvement, strategic sourcing, continual improvement, and site leadership.

Prior to joining Calibre Scientific, James held the roles of Operations Manager and Site Leader at VWR Chemicals, and Operations Director at Research Organics. In these roles, James oversaw day-to-day operations and improved efficiencies within his sector, achieving over 30% growth in his last year with VWR. Previous positions have required James to work with management, sales, and operations staff to integrate new systems and technologies while continuing to meet sales goals, giving him the background necessary to streamline processes and improve operations across Calibre Scientific’s diverse portfolio.

James has a BS in Nuclear Engineering and Technology and an MBA with an emphasis in Supply Chain/Operations Management. He is also a graduate of the United States Navy’s Naval Nuclear Power Training Program.


MIKE BROWNLEADER Director of European Operations and Sales

Dr. Mike Brownleader is the Director of European Operations and Sales and CEO of BioservUK, Protein Ark and OEEEY. As a protein biochemist with more than two decades of experience in the life sciences market, Brownleader has also had 25 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals. Attracting more than £1M research awards from national funding agencies, Brownleader was awarded the prestigious Special Research Fellowship of The Leverhulme Trust for research.

Prior to BioServ, Protein Ark and OEEEY, Brownleader worked as R & D Applications Manager at Sartorius Lab Ltd., a leading global provider of innovative, low-to-high throughput sample preparation tools and solutions for the research product and clinical diagnostic arenas. In 2001, he founded Generon Ltd, a UK distributor of protein sample preparation kits, services and reagents to the biolab market. His role included the active management of the UK field and internal sales team targeting pharma, biotech, universities, research institutes and hospitals.

In 2014, Brownleader founded Protein Ark Ltd., an R & D and applications-focused life science consumable company offering a comprehensive range of sample preparation and protein separation kits and custom services for the clinical diagnostic and drug discovery research markets. He purchased BioservUK Ltd., a CRO/CMO company offering de novo and bulk manufacturing of custom antibodies, recombinant proteins and peptides for the IVD market. Together with OEEEY Ltd., a company offering innovative knowledge management and big data mining software for biomedical and life scientists, all three businesses were sold to Calibre Scientific in Spring of 2018.

Brownleader remains an honorary lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry at UCL.
